Consultancy & Guest Lecturing/Speaking

Thank you for your interest in including me in your upcoming research or community project or event, I am grateful that you are considering me!

I receive a lot of Consultancy and Guest Speaker requests, so please take some time to read this page to establish whether I will be a good fit for your project. If so, please complete the Consultancy request form below to submit a query and I will be in touch with you to discuss further.

I am an experienced, and fully registered Speech Language Therapist (registered with the NZSTA), and have lived experience of cleft lip and palate, and hold a PhD degree in both Speech and Language Sciences, and in Psychology. I have an extensive and established international programme of cleft and lived experience research, as well as significant experience and expertise developing community based interventions such as camps, adventure days, and patient and clinician conferences. I have been a consultant and advisor to many university, health service, government, and community-led projects and programmes around the world – most commonly relating to cleft and craniofacial conditions, as well as the importance of including lived experience and family perspectives.

I can help with many different aspects of research including preparing ethics applications, reading over and editing project materials through a lived experience and/or a clinician’s lens, as well as developing public facing materials for your research (e.g. information sheets, lay summaries etc.) I also can assist with consultancy for funding requests etc.

I can develop training resources and workshops on all manner of topics related to cleft and craniofacial conditions, lived experience input, shared decision making etc. I also am happy to present on my own lived experiences of growing up with cleft, and have done many such presentations for community groups. I have given many invited presentations on these topics throughout the world, including guest lectures within university programmes, as a keynote speaker at conferences, and at community group events. You can see a list of my recent presentations here.

Finally, I am available to provide clinical speech language therapy supervision, either on an ongoing basis, or on an ad-hoc basis to do a case review.

When you work with me, I bring this wealth of experience, as well as my passion and dedication to your project, training programme or event. If you’re not sure whether my expertise aligns with your project needs, please get in touch by submitting a request below and I’d be happy to discuss further.

I am available to provide both in-person, and remote consultancy and guest presentations throughout the world.

The charges for Consultancy & Guest Lecturing/Speaking work are proportionate to the type of work being requested and performed. You know that my fees are fair as all my fees are pegged to the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in the UK’s payment guidance for researchers and professionals involving people in research. Please feel free to view the payment rates section in the NIHR link for an idea of costs.

The best way to know exactly what the cost will be is to submit a request below. When you submit a request, I will provide you with a no-obligation quote for the proposed work using the rates table below. You will have an opportunity to review the quote before deciding whether you would like to proceed.

I receive many requests for Consultancy & Guest Lecturing services, and it is not sustainable to offer these services for free – providing these services amounts to a substantial proportion of my time, and that time is not compensated from elsewhere. Additionally, providing consultancy and guest speaker services does incur real costs for the person/people providing those services and should be compensated. Finally, I would hope you would agree the level of expertise that I offer can bring substantial value to your projects and events, and is worth paying for.

I believe my fees for Consultancy and Guest Lecturing/Speaking are fair, and are set by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in the UK’s payment guidance for researchers and professionals involving people in research. You can read more about this guidance here.

If your organisation cannot afford to pay for Consultancy and/or Guest Lecturing services, I do donate a proportion of my time every year to doing pro-bono (free/voluntary) work. I reserve my unpaid capacity primarily for projects that genuinely wouldn’t be able to do the work if they needed to pay collaborators. To put in a request for pro-bono work, please complete the Consultancy submission form below, and indicate that you would like to be considered for pro-bono work. When evaluating requests for pro-bono work, I typically consider (and prioritise) the following:

  • Country of the request (LMICs are usually prioritised for this stream)
  • The organisation making the request (small NGOs and student projects are prioritised for donated time over larger organisations and institutions)
  • Is there a funder/existing funding request for this project? Could a funding request be made for consultancy?
  • Are you being paid for your time on the project? Are others involved with the project remunerated?

Please complete this form to submit your request: Submit a Consultancy / Guest Speaker Request
