Register now for the 2024 Cleft Youth Camp!

I’m very excited to be working with Cleft New Zealand to deliver a special event for young people and adolescents in our New Zealand cleft community – a youth camp in the Term 1 School Holidays next year!

If you, or your child will be aged between 10-18 in April 2024, then you’re eligible to participate in our 3-day, 2-night camp in Whangaparaoa, Auckland!

The camp is brought to you by Cleft New Zealand, who are working closely with our cleft research team at the University of Canterbury (UC), to design and deliver an epic camp experience full of fun activities, meaningful workshops, good food and excellent company!

The camp has been funded thanks to a generous grant from Lotteries Health Research. Although the camp has been paid for, we ask all attendees to pay a $100 deposit. This helps us to ensure your commitment to attend, as it’s important we accurately estimate numbers. Your deposit is fully refundable if you attend the camp, or you could choose to donate the camp deposit to Cleft New Zealand – it’s entirely up to you. If the deposit requirement would be prohibitive to you/your child attending, please get in touch – we will review cases of financial hardship on an individual basis.

In addition, thanks to the grant, we are able to subsidise travel for people attending from wherever you are in Aotearoa, so just because you don’t live in Auckland, it doesn’t mean you will miss out. Make sure you register early though as places on the camp are limited!

Many people with cleft have found peer support from other people with lived experience of cleft to be a valuable support mechanism on the cleft journey and camps can be a great way to build your support network, confidence and self-esteem.

You can learn more, including checking out all the frequently asked questions, here, and register for tickets below.

Are you aged 20 or older? Consider being a volunteer on the camp instead. You can pre-register to be a volunteer below too!

Help us to promote the camp!

You can help us to promote the camp by displaying a poster in your waiting room, workplace, community noticeboard etc. Simply download the poster below, print it off (we recommend A3), and then display it wherever you see fit! If you would like to advertise the camp on social media, please use the social media tile below!

Research at the Camp

This camp is being organised by myself with Cleft New Zealand. Separate to the camp programme itself, I am carrying out a research project through the University of Canterbury to understand the impact that attending events such as this have on people’s overall wellbeing, self-esteem, and confidence. If you register to attend the camp, you will be invited to participate in this evaluation study, which involves completing a few short surveys to evaluate your experience at camp. More information will be provided when you register for the camp. Please note that participating in the research is optional, and will not affect whether or not you can come to camp.
