1) Hard Times – Paramore
This entire song has to pretty much sum up life at the moment, we certainly are living in hard times, and it’s a great anthem to have a one person disco to. Best lyric: Hard times, hard times!
2) Mixed Up World – Sophie Ellis-Bextor
An older track but still ever so relevant today – for the vast majority of us, the world has never felt as mixed up as it does right now – to have the whole world impacted by the same thing all at once is something we’ve never experienced before. Sophie will keep our spirits up though. Best lyric: So when you’re feeling kinda mixed up, remember it’s a mixed up world, and if you’re feeling life is just too tough, remember you’re a real tough girl.
3) These Days – Rudimental feat. Jess Glynne & Macklemore
These Days is an excellent reminder that this is just a moment in time, and that although things may feel pretty scary right now, life is not always going to be this way, and that in time, we will all be able to sit down again together and celebrate how we got through these days. Best lyric: I hope some day we’ll sit down together and laugh with each other about these days.
4) Pompeii – Bastille
This song is all about how everything is changing in the city, the walls coming tumbling down, but challenges us to think about how can we be optimistic about the situation. Best lyric: But if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing’s changed at all? How am I going to be an optimist about this?
5) Dancing On My Own – Robyn
With people all across the world being asked to stay home, to use social distancing, and to self-isolate, it’s inevitable we’re going to see a lot more people dancing on their own – myself included – it’s great exercise and good for the serotonin levels – Robyn’s got your back! Best lyric: Oooh, I keep dancing on my own. So far away but still so near.
6) Life – Des’ree
Life, oh life, it’s so unpredictable isn’t it?! All those plans we had for 2020 are very up in the air which is so frustrating and upsetting. In this upbeat hit, Des’ree reminds us sometimes in life we just have to roll with what we’re faced with. Best lyric: Sometimes living out your dreams ain’t as easy as it seems, you want to fly around the world in a beautiful balloon.
7) OK – Robin Schulz feat. James Blunt
Things are feeling a bit shitty right now and you’d be forgiven for worrying that this is just how things are going to be now, but the good news is that they won’t be. Throughout human history disasters and pandemics have been a part of the human story, and they always leave eventually – this won’t last forever, and will be okay. Best lyric: It’s gonna be OK.
8) Absolutely Everybody – Vanessa Amorosi
As I don’t need to tell you, one of the most surreal things about this whole situation is that is impacting the entire world, absolutely everybody, in such profound ways; we’ve just never seen anything like it in living memory. We’re all in this together, we need to support and look out for one another – we will get through this. Best lyric: Absolutely everybody, every boy and every girl, every woman and child, every father and son, I said now everyone, yes, now everyone, everybody.
9) I Want To Break Free – Queen
With us going into lockdowns and curfews all around the world, we’re increasingly becoming prisoner in our own homes, and although we know and respect the importance of following the instructions, it doesn’t mean we aren’t counting down the days until we can break free once more! Best lyric: Oh, how I want to break free, but life still goes on, I can’t get used to living without, living without you, by my side, I don’t want to live alone, hey, God knows, got to make it on my own.
10) Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
Stayin’ alive is what this is all about – we all need to do our bit to make sure everybody that we know and love makes it through this epoch alive. Best lyric:Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother, you’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive, feel the city breakin’ and everybody shakin’, and we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
